Intense, Rewarding Sound
Having always owned bookshelf speakers, I was delighted when my wife suggested she'd be amenable to the diminutive Oberon 5. Ryan at Prestwich kindly arranged a demo at short notice and I was blown away, literally. It's hard to understand how these small speakers can generate such a whirlwind of sound - Powerful volume, deep bass, lovely separation, astounding dynamics on drums, yet still retaining perfect clarity of Mark Knopfler's electric guitar. I bought a pair there and then.
Setting them up at home revealed the same exciting impact. My living room is a small 4m x 3m with wooden floors and painted walls. Initially I found the bass to be boomy, far too much decay on kick drums, with a percussive impact that could be physically felt on my eardrum, a rather unpleasant sensation. I set to work on how to improve this: Dali recommend leaving 20cm distance to walls - I found 30cm to be the minimum required to reduce bass reflections. They also advise not to angle the speakers towards the listening position - follow this advice! When I tried this it created a boomy 'hotspot' of bass in the primary listening position, which was not present on the next seat.
his wasn't enough on its own - I had far better results by installing the supplied spikes, resting them on a thick chopping board which itself rests on felt pads. This massively improved the bass boom. Also beware - the run-in time on these is loooooong. I am on day 5 of near constant playback and have only today felt the bass now matches the sonic profile intended at recording, hence the review.
And it sounds FANTASTIC. I don't want this review to put you off these speakers. If you have the patience to nurture them you will be greatly rewarded - they are wonderful. Please remember I'm not used to floorstanders so this level of bass was alien to me, and my room is not acoustically ideal. The speakers are so good, they really show up every aspect of a recording. So now that I'm confident they're performing correctly, when I hear 'Doin' It Right' by Daft Punk, I know that the booming kick drum is the artist's intention, not an inadequacy of the speakers.

Very nice sound just starting to bed in
Very happy with my cambridge units and speakers all set up now and can now listen to my quite large cd collection and have a new aerial for stations so all good . Fm/dab has been put back a further 10 years by gov so have use for another decade. Will add a streamer in near future. So yes all good very happy with my set up and all the greatest from you guys at richer sounds exeter

So easy to live with
They are just starting to loosen up. Now that lovely detailed imagery is starting to shine. Suit room size well and easy to tap along to a real rythm in the music.

Wonderful Speakers!
I bought the speakers as an upgrade to my existing pair and couldn't be happier! Although they are not physically big they pack a punch, and give a full well rounded sound. I would recommend these for anyone looking for a pair of floor-standers!
