Planar magnetic headphones for low distortion
Although more expensive to make, planar magnetic headphones offer a number of advantages over conventional dynamic ones. These include lighter diaphragms for a faster response and a linear spread of sound across the speaker, reducing the level of distortion.

Really good for the money
I've had these for quite a while now, so felt it only right to leave a review. Frankly, these are brilliant for the money. I decided, on the back of a nice tax rebate, to become a multiple headphone owner, on the basis that some models are better in certain areas than others. I already had a set of Sennheiser 560s' from Richer Sounds which I'd been very happy with, but I felt that my iFi Zen DAC V2 had more to offer, especially if I used the balanced 4.4mm output. Turns out I was right. The Sundaras are absolute detail hounds, whilst still allowing the "tune" to carry through, if that makes sense. I listen to pretty much all types of music, and the only recordings I've found disagreeable are low-bitrate streams, mp3 quality. Feed the Sundaras minimum 16-bit, CD quality material, and they start to shine. Ramp up the quality, via something like a 24-bit UHD stream from Qobuz and you're sitting there for hours, just lapping it up. As mentioned, I'm using them via the iFi DAC's balanced output, and I purchased a suitable cable from an online seller for this, as Richer Sounds didn't appear to have anything suitable at that price point. I would be interested to do an A/B test with the latest iteration of the Grado SR325, just to compare the sound, but I could never live with another pair of Grados. I had a set before, and the way they're built and sit on the head just doesn't suit me. Bottom line; I would absolutely buy these again, for the money. My Sennheisers have been honourably relegated to beside the TV, for late-night blu-ray viewing, although still very good in their own right. As always with Richer Sounds, excellent service. My local store didn't have them, but I still had them in my hand very quickly after ordering. Never had a bad shopping experience with them, and always recommend them to others.

If you are looking for affordable headphones for desk or armchair listening (or for long trips, if you have a portable DAC to accompany you), you will hardly find something that can compete with the Sundara by Hifi-Man in terms of sound quality. Lacking in treble
I have lived with these headphones now for over 6 months. Don't believe all the reviews - while they are good, they suffer from low sensitivity (volume) and a reduced treble compared to all my other headphones. While the sound has good dynamics, the poor treble really takes the edge off the enjoyment of the music. I listen mainly to rock, so I enjoy cymbals and guitar harmonics amongst other sounds. Listening on speakers is much more realistic.

I bought this headphones few weeks ago and I'm so happy with them. Sound is amazing so I can strongly recommended if someone looking for maybe not a cheap headphones but also not so expensive. Thank you Richersound.

HIFIMAN Sundara - Super Value Planar Magnetic Cans
Bought these last month. The manufacturer (HIFIMAN) suggests up to 150 hour "burn in" to reach their peak sound quality. However, after only a few hours use, my pair already sound absolutely fantastic. Already own Grados, Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics but these are my first planar magnetic headphones. Highly impressed!! Currently using with a Bluesound Node 2i streamer (Qobuz, Radio Paradise) into a Chord Mojo DAC/headphone amp. Also soon adding an Ifi Zen Can Signature HFM headphone amp to use with an Arcam Solo Mini for CD playback.

Recent Purchase of Hifiman Sundara Headphones
Headphones arrived promptly next-day as expected and were well packaged. The headphones themselves at first sounded a bit flat and somewhat lean, contrary to the positive reviews I had read. I then read in the information leaflet included which mentioned a burn-in period of up to 150 hours. So, I let them play for a couple of days and hey-presto they came alive! Now, further down the road, they are pleasingly neutral, natural sounding with a wide soundstage and sweet resonant bass. I've heard reviewers say the Sundara is bass lite, I don't agree. Bass is natural and accurate - I use the ifi Hip Dac v2 to drive them and with the bass boost feature switched on they have amazing zeal and slam. To get the best from the Sundara I think it's a matter of getting past a couple of days burning-in and using a good DAC/AMP to drive them for scintillating results. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with these cans, they're a good investment in my view I recommend them wholeheartedly. Last word...they don't work well through a phone or iPad headphone jack; they are made for use with a DAC/AMP combo.
