HiFiMAN SUNDARA
Over Ear Open Back Headphones
£299
”With the Sundara the music was enjoyable, having good channel separation and clearly focused central information.” ’Hi-Fi News’ – Editor’s Choice.
Planar magnetic headphones for low distortion
Although more expensive to make, planar magnetic headphones offer a number of advantages over conventional dynamic ones. These include lighter diaphragms for a faster response and a linear spread of sound across the speaker, reducing the level of distortion.
Super-thin diaphragms for enhanced detail and speed
Featuring supernano diaphragms that are 80% thinner than previous designs, the SUNDARA’s benefit acoustically. Thinner diaphragms are lighter, meaning music is faster to respond and react to differences in tempo. Lighter weight also makes for superior high-end detail and a more nuanced sound. In short, the sound is more lifelike than ever.
Easy to drive
A relatively high sensitivity makes the SUNDARA easy to power. Although a dedicated headphone amp will always sound best, the SUNDARA’s are efficient enough to be driven by most built-in headphone stages or even a smartphone.
Robust yet light
With a chassis constructed from sheet metal, not plastic, the SUNDARA headphones are durable and long lasting. Despite this, the slim, aluminium chassis design means they’re comparatively lightweight – especially given their enveloping design.
Built for comfort
Large earcups envelope your ears for immersive comfort. The wide headband evenly distributes weight over your head, making these headphones supremely comfortable to wear for hours on end.

Lacking in treble
I have lived with these headphones now for over 6 months. Don't believe all the reviews - while they are good, they suffer from low sensitivity (volume) and a reduced treble compared to all my other headphones. While the sound has good dynamics, the poor treble really takes the edge off the enjoyment of the music. I listen mainly to rock, so I enjoy cymbals and guitar harmonics amongst other sounds. Listening on speakers is much more realistic.

HIFIMAN Sundara - Super Value Planar Magnetic Cans
Bought these last month. The manufacturer (HIFIMAN) suggests up to 150 hour "burn in" to reach their peak sound quality. However, after only a few hours use, my pair already sound absolutely fantastic. Already own Grados, Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics but these are my first planar magnetic headphones. Highly impressed!! Currently using with a Bluesound Node 2i streamer (Qobuz, Radio Paradise) into a Chord Mojo DAC/headphone amp. Also soon adding an Ifi Zen Can Signature HFM headphone amp to use with an Arcam Solo Mini for CD playback.

Recent Purchase of Hifiman Sundara Headphones
Headphones arrived promptly next-day as expected and were well packaged. The headphones themselves at first sounded a bit flat and somewhat lean, contrary to the positive reviews I had read. I then read in the information leaflet included which mentioned a burn-in period of up to 150 hours. So, I let them play for a couple of days and hey-presto they came alive! Now, further down the road, they are pleasingly neutral, natural sounding with a wide soundstage and sweet resonant bass. I've heard reviewers say the Sundara is bass lite, I don't agree. Bass is natural and accurate - I use the ifi Hip Dac v2 to drive them and with the bass boost feature switched on they have amazing zeal and slam. To get the best from the Sundara I think it's a matter of getting past a couple of days burning-in and using a good DAC/AMP to drive them for scintillating results. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with these cans, they're a good investment in my view I recommend them wholeheartedly. Last word...they don't work well through a phone or iPad headphone jack; they are made for use with a DAC/AMP combo.

A good choice for me
My first planar headphones. Really like the clear, open sound, no problem with listening fatigue. Recommended if you will use them in a quiet environment, as they don't isolate you. Nice how the packaging becomes a headphone stand.

Great sounds, really comfortable.
I’ve been using these for about a month now, listening to Apple Music through a Dragonfly Cobalt DAC. The best quality I’ve heard, easy to listen for long periods, the sound isn’t fatiguing like other headphones I’ve tried. They are comfortable as well, and I wear glasses which has always been awkward with headphones. They are pretty leaky though and don’t isolate you from outside sounds at all.
Great service from Richer sounds as ever.

No Issues
I bought my pair of Sundara headphones just over a week ago, they arrived next day as promised even though it was right before the Jubilee celebrations. Also, the headphones are amazing, 10/10.
