With a mighty 100W per channel and the quality to match, the Yamaha AS701 packs a punch.

Powerful sound

Using high specification, custom-made components, the Yamaha AS701 has been designed to fill even the largest rooms with rich, dynamic sound. An uprated power supply with dual heat sinks ensures that the AS701 can produce a loud and punchy sound without the risk of overheating. Put together, these features give the 100W Yamaha a majestic sound with the scale and range of a much more expensive amp.

Sound first
The AS701 is constructed with Yamaha's ToP-ART and ART principles. Top-ART design ensures that left and right channels are perfectly symmetrical, with signal paths as short as possible. This results in the highest precision and lowest distortion. Complementing this is ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) construction. Its reinforced casing and damped base reduce mechanical vibration, so improving the sound's precision and detail. A Pure Direct switch bypasses the tone and balance controls for an even more detailed, true-to-life sound quality.

CD direct amplification
Taking Pure Direct sound one stage further than the AS501, the bigger Yamaha also comes fitted with CD Direct Amplification. Dedicated to the CD input only, once engaged, this optimises the input circuitry for a cleaner, tauter sound. Subtle detail becomes more apparent and the music sounds that bit more natural.

Digital inputs and Bluetooth
With hi-fi systems being asked to handle more and more digital sources, Yamaha has equipped the AS701 to cope with ease. It has both optical and coaxial digital inputs for your TV, CD player or other source with digital output. Taking this one stage further, add the optional Yamaha YBA-11 Bluetooth receiver and you'll be able to effortlessly link up your smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth-equipped device, giving you simple, wireless music streaming.

Plenty of connections
In addition to the digital connections, the A-S701 comes with a broad range of other sockets. Five line level inputs, two recording loops and a phono input for your turntable, plus a subwoofer output make for plenty of options. There are two sets of separately switched speaker sockets and a headphone output too. A remote control that will also operate other Yamaha devices is also included.

With power matched by equal control, the Yamaha AS701 amplifier provides a winning formula.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the wait. Ordered this on 23rd of December. I was aware I wouldn't get it for Xmas, and to be honest, didn't think it would be till after New year, due to Xmas store closures, but was more than delighted that it was delivered on 27th December. They kept me informed right up to delivery, so spot on communications. Hubby had been looking at this particular amp for some time, and was so glad Santa hadn't forgot him after all. He assures me he's very impressed with the sound and so much so that even I get to listen to all his albums (again!) only this time, he'll point out things he's hearing for the first time, due to how good this amp is. So thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Play it loud After my hard-working Sony amp expired, I wanted to replace it with one that gave at least the same output, had more sockets than a 1930’s telephone exchange and would not suffer distortion when consistently operated with the volume, (on a decimal scale), upwards of 7. I also wanted one that had physical presence, not a minimalist bit of kit with no buttons or dials that got lost on my glass shelving. With a flexible budget, I kept coming back to the Yamaha. In black. The specs added up. When it arrived I was not disappointed, it is big, heavy and has a solid build quality. I matched it to a pair of new Mission QX2 speakers. On first power up, I selected each input and wound the volume up to the stop, no noise or hum. I then started with some gentle tunes on the turntable, Pink Floyd: Obscured by Clouds, it was a revelation, so crisp and light, it appears I have been listening with my head wrapped in bandages all these years. Next is a vinyl, High on Fire: Art of Self Defense” I originally thought it must have been a poor pressing, as it always sounded “confused”, especially when played really loud, on the Yamaha it just all falls into place, I really pushed the volume, my dogs wouldn’t come back in the house, the bass and drums are pummelling and the lead guitar cuts through with precision and direction, vocalist Matt Pike was standing next to me, screaming in my ears, fantastic stuff. I am now going back through my collection and it’s almost like hearing them for the first time. Only small niggles are : no position indicator or LED on the volume control and speaker selector is a puny twist switch. Otherwise all positives….

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yamaha AS701 Amp I purchased the Yamaha AS701 two weeks ago. I needed a good quality hifi amp that could run two sets of speakers and would accommodate my Phono, CD (Yamaha S300) and Cassette player. The Yamaha AS701 could do all this and much more and was powerful enough for my Wharfedale 157 speakers. I made the purchase via telesales and have to say the service was excellent, the amp was delivered the next day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like having prescription lenses - but for my ears! This A-S701 is the first Yamaha amp I've bought since the A-420 (25yrs ago but still in the loft as back-up) as I didn’t really care for their later models that much when it came time for me to indulge in a little non-essential upgrading 20+ years ago and I bought my much-loved Marantz PM66SE KI instead. However, as the Marantz has now developed a fault it meant that this time around it was definitely a required upgrade. Having tried all of the available alternative amps, in every shop within 20 miles, the only amp that caught me in any way was one on offer at £1,145.00 - well outside my chosen budget. Out of desperation and based (more or less) purely on it’s looks alone I wondered whether perhaps the Yamaha A-S701 might sound as equally desirable as it’s retro appearance suggested, but with the added advantage of modern-day digital inputs etc. Having nothing to lose, because of the safety-net that the "Remote Selling Regulations" provided me, I decided to find out and so I put a call in to the RicherSounds Telesales Team. When I came to unpack the A-S701 I couldn’t help but realise that this is a solid, heavy, beautifully made amp that seems to have been built by Yamaha to last for..well, forever really. The sound, even straight out of the box, proved to be more than a match for my much acclaimed PM66SE-KI and revealed previously unheard detail and placement that made me sit-up and take notice immediately. Spurred on by that initial revelation I then eagerly set about re-discovering all of my favourite CDs and was consistently gobsmacked each time by just how much I’d been missing. The Wharfedale 230s (to my ears) really seem to enjoy working with the A-S701 and albums that had always previously sounded just a little bit on the messy side suddenly snapped into sharp focus and the sound-stage projected well out into the room. A good example of which being that while listening to one of Burial’s tracks the ambient sounds underlying it seemed to be coming in from outside of the room and I had to actually get up and go see if it really was raining. For the very first time I could easily pick out separate instruments clearly instead of them being slightly lost in a wall of sound and I so threw everything I had at the Yamaha A-S701/Wharfedale 230 combo including albums from AIM, Apparat, Blue Nile, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, David Sylvian, JM Jarre, Steely Dan, Talk Talk, VNV Nation and The Waterboys - as well as loads of classical stuff including Arvo Part, Philip Glass, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble, Max Richter, Schubert (Piano Sonatas) and was constantly left mesmerised by the new detail and depth of sound i was hearing. If I’d been trading up from a mini system I wouldn’t have been particularly surprised but moving up from an amp like the still sought-after (even faulty ones) PM66SE-KI, I was...big time!! I am now loving all my music all over again and in many cases it’s like listening to them for the first time and I can’t see me needing to upgrade again for any reason for many years to come - maybe never!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb amplifier for the price but..... Make no mistake, this is a superb amplifier for the amount of money asked for it. Built like a tank, the AS701 from Yamaha is solidly made and sounds wonderful. Why pay much more, if the facilities it has are what you like and need? Pure amplification without any unnecessary gizmos. Be warned, however, that the rear speaker terminals on this UK version will not accept banana plugs but bare wires only. Not a problem in itself, of course, but I did order some new plugs and cable with the amplifier and nobody at Richer Sounds warned me that I was wasting my money on the plugs, as they would not fit the amplifier. So full marks for the Yamaha but less than fulsome praise for Richer Sounds. This was a special order so I did not have the opportunity to see the amp before purchase.
