” You’d have to spend considerably more to match or better the quality on offer here, making this nothing short of a conspicuous bargain.” ’Hi-Fi News’ – Outstanding Product.
The finest sounding Cambridge Audio amp ever
Painstaking developed over many years, the Edge A was tuned not by machine but by human ear. Once perfected, the end result delivers perfect musical balance with nothing added or taken away. With every component selected by listening session, the Edge A sounds closer to live music than ever. If you want to hear what the musician hears, listen to this.
Ultimate precision
Using twin toroidal transformers the Edge A cancels electromagnetic interference. This gives lower distortion and an ‘inky black’ background, meaning you hear every detail of music – no matter how subtle.
Sweet music
Using an element of Class A amplifier design gives the Edge A a sweet and natural sound that rivals the finest valve amps. Cambridge Audio also replaced conventional capacitors with DC coupled topology and a precision volume control. When combined, these provide the cleanest signal path for uninterrupted, musical magic.
Power to match the precision
This highly developed hybrid amplifier has no problem driving hard as it does sounding sweet. Packing a true 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms and a monstrous 200 watts at 4 ohms, the Edge A is unfazed by almost any speaker. Unlike some high-end amplifiers, this is one design that takes difficult speakers in its stride.
Style and substance in perfect harmony
The Cambridge Edge A looks every bit as exquisite as it sounds. Using the same principles of precision and ‘nothing added’, the minimalist design is timeless. The smooth, all-metal casing is crafted to the highest standards. As an indication as to just how solidly this amp is constructed, just take a look at the weight – a mighty 24.4kg of British beef!
The highest level of digital streaming – via USB
If you’ve got a precious digital music library stored on your laptop or PC then the very best way to access it is via USB. The USB Audio Class 2.0 interface supports up to 32-bit/384kHz or DSD256 for effortless Hi-Res music playback.
Studio grade XLR balanced inputs and outputs
If you prefer analogue connectivity then the Edge A has that covered, too. A set of XLR balanced inputs lets you connect a suitable CD player or network streamer with studio grade precision. Balanced cables offer better shielding and a more stable signal, letting you hear every detail that the Edge A is capable of.
High resolution Bluetooth
With support for aptX, the Bluetooth receiver built-in gets the best from your smartphone or tablet. This wireless connection gets close to CD quality while offering the convenience of streaming music straight from your device.
Connect your TV via HDMI
When your amp sounds this good it would be a shame not to let your TV share the benefit. An HDMI with ARC (Audio Return Channel) means you can connect up your TV and benefit from its audio being played through the amp – MTV will never have sounded so good!
Your other digital and analogue devices – fully connected
Thanks to built-in DACs (Digital to Analogue Convertors), the Edge A enhances the sound of your digital components. Plug in up to three devices, such as CD/DVD player, games console and streamer and you’ll get a significant upgrade in sound. For analogue sources there’s an additional two pairs of phono RCA inputs – perfect for connecting a quality phono stage.
You’ve heard the rest, now hear the best – Cambridge Audio has the Edge.

A journey to achieve the right system
I truly believe that the journey to achieve the right system for oneself is a lifelong passion, that changes with perspective and circumstance.
Cambridge Audio Edge NQ
Cambridge Audio Edge A
KEF R5 speakers
REL T9X subwoofer (x2)
Tellurium Q Black ii XLR
Tellurium Q Black ii Speaker Cable
Apple Mac Mini M1
Qobuz
Roon
I am very lucky to have put together an amazing collection of components to achieve a remarkable system (for me).
It has taken a couple of years to get the right combination for my requirements (as I am recovering from multiple Strokes and so suffer from anxiety from high levels).
Whilst listening at low volume I still wanted exceptional detail, a great sense of scale and depth, and a good degree of low frequency when required.
I have tried all manner of different setups, including integrated, pre/power, bi-amping, massive floor-standing speakers, bookshelves with a subwoofer… the list is extensive.
I had £1,000, £10,000 and even a few £30,000 setups, but I was never really able to find the right balance between detail, volume and a truly spacious soundstage.
Performances were either too narrow, too bloated, too loud, too compressed or too muddy.
Some were far too forward, leading to fatigue. Others were extremely neutral or analytical, losing all emotional connection.
However, my recent acquisition of the Cambridge Audio Edge A seems to have been the final ingredient to my goal.
The system gives…
- smooth high frequencies, which are kind to my Stroke related issues (anxiety and fatigue)
- mid-range is well-defined and does not bleed into or overwhelm the highs
- integration of the subwoofers with the speakers (each sub is connected to the actual speaker at high-level to the binding posts) gives an outstanding sense of air and separation within the soundstage, as well as exceptional low-level performance that is controlled at all levels
I think that every person has a different requirement for a perfect system (for them). No ‘one’ system is perfect, better or worse than another, and I think my experience shows this.
Notes:
The Edge A is set to 50% volume on A3 (XLR) input, with the remote sensor covered up.
The Edge NQ is setup with Pre-amp on and is used to control the volume, as the quality of the volume section in the NQ is exceptional.
Having the NQ Pre-amp turned on allows me to adjust the volume using Roon on my Apple Mac Mac M1, which is connected via Ethernet, utilising the Roon Ready functionality of the NQ.
As the two components are connected together via the Trigger link, and the remote control sensor of the Edge A is covered, when I use the remote the volume of the Edge A does not change (from the 50% level that I set manually). Additionally, the NQ sends the Edge A the power on and off signals, so both work together very effectively.
I have tried using Edge W’s (single amp and two for bi-amping) yet I found the single Edge A to be smoother at the top end and to give more detail and control when played at low levels. I think this is due to my other components and the configuration of the room.
The ability of the REL T9X subwoofers to allow high-level connectivity to the speaker terminals is also important in achieving the best performance at low-volume levels. The independent crossover and volume control of the RELs allow them to be extremely flexible in their setup, thus allowing them to integrate into just about any system or environment.
I originally had only the speakers, but with low-volume listening the details and soundstage just collapsed.
I then added a single sub, which definitely made things better.
Strangely adding more bottom end allowed the mids and highs to become more separated at lower levels, but I wanted a more expansive soundstage with more overall stability.
Adding the second sub achieved this, with one sub linked to its own Speaker, thus making the speakers appear full-range to the listener, although the dialling in of the sub settings took a few days.
Overall, the system works together really nicely with great synergy between all the components.

Best performance of any amplifier I've ever used.
I was not aware of this amplifier before I was introduced to it by Damien, the Richer Sounds Manager at Brighton.
It is truly spectacular driving my Focal speakers, also recommended by RS...
... and the Roksan CD player, similarly from RS.

Ultimate sound for pound hi end amp
I have had this amp for 3 weeks. Replaced a £ 800 pre power combo from a renowned brand and it is superior on most counts. Soundstage, presence, toneality and instrumental timre, dynamics and detail. I have compared directly to several £10k integrated designs and it is the equal of all of them (or better). a REAL BARGAIN but once its installed don't move it around too much, it is big and heavy! Delivery service was exceptional.

It just makes the music fun
There’s a popular YouTube reviewer who recently set up a system to get that excitement back into his thin 1980’s records and did so with a Hegel amp. I think you will get the same impact with this Cambridge Edge for half the price and it also looks so much better. It just puts a smile on my face every time I sit down to listen.

Brilliant Edge.
If you’re in the market for a new amplifier and have the money, just go and buy it. It is that good. It’s draws you into the music and doesn’t let go. Is there any need to look elsewhere, no... superb.
