Sennheiser HD820 (Black)
Over Ear Closed Back Headphones
£1,299
”Sennheiser’s terrific HD 820s overcome the limitations of closed-back headphones.”– ‘What Hi-Fi’ – 5 Star review. Tested at £1999
A new standard for closed-back headphone sound
Closed-back headphones keep background noise out but can also sound ‘shut in’. The Sennheiser HD820 changes all this. Using innovative technology, these German built headphones set new standards for precision and realism in closed-back headphones.
Hear a transparent sound
The reference, studio quality sound form these headphones comes courtesy of Sennheiser’s breakthrough technology. Unique Ring Radiator transducers with glass covers create stunning realism and detail. The glass reflects sound waves from the rear of the speaker to an absorber which minuses distortion to the lowest levels you’ll hear in this type of headphone.
Pro connectivity
For everyday use, the HD820 comes with a standard, 6.35mm plug connection cable. Being much more than ‘everyday’ headphones, though, they also come with a pro-grade, balanced cable. The balanced connection gives the lowest levels of distortion and is fitted with a balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn plug. An XLR-4 adaptor is also included. Both cables are silver-plated OFC with gold-plated plugs for the purest sound possible.
Reference comfort
There's little point in a reference quality pair of headphones if they're uncomfortable to wear. Fortunately, the Sennheiser HD820s are anything but. The large earcups naturally fit around your ears and are lined with microfiber fabric for cool, sweat-free contact. The metal headband features an inner damping element and generous padding for comfort right around your head.
Hear the best of all worlds, with the Sennheiser HD820.

Incredible - if your source is high quality
I was initially worried when I bought these headphones that I couldn't seem to tell the difference between them and the less expensive Sennheiser headphones I was already using. The I realised that I was listening to streamed music, albeit on the highest quality streaming available. So I went and dug out a CD and used my TEAC stereo and Oh My God what a difference! The original headphones (Sennheiser 515s), which are a few years old but hardly cheap, give a good sound with the CD, but the HD820s are just next level (next 2-3 levels in fact). I now understand the meaning of the word "soundscape". Listening to a CD I have listened to literally hundreds of times, it was like a whole new listening experience - there is so much more detail and clarity, entirely new aspects of the mix were jumping out at me and the stereo landscape feels so much richer. I went for the closed-back headphones for a specific reason (potential to be using them in an environment where there is external sound that would leak through open-backed phones). It would be fascinating to compare these with the HD800S (open-backed), which are cheaper but supposed to give an even more pure sound reproduction (although less so in the bass, which is important to me as I'm a bass player). But I cannot complain about these headphones, when listening to high quality audio they are incredible. I would say, though, that if you are only listening to streamed or compressed music, you will struggle to tell the difference to cheaper models and I'm not sure I would recommend the jump in price.

Superb sound
Sound field width and depth very impressive. Distinction given to all instruments and placement excellent. Detail that is brought out excellent. Timbre of instruments being listened to is excellent. Enjoyment of listening to music has been improved so much using these headphones with Sennheiser HDVA600 headphone amp. Guys at Richer Sounds were excellent to deal with, in my case Alan And Charlie in Glasgow. They both were very helpful in getting my purchase correct.
