Good Entry Native 4K Laser Projector
I had been looking to upgrade my HD projector to a 4K one and had been holding back for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I couldn’t find anything as quiet as the JVC D-ILA projector I had which was whisper quiet, secondly I wanted a laser projector with a native UHD panel, and thirdly one which wasn’t too heavy so that I could reuse the existing projector ceiling mount.
I had my eye on this projector for some time due to the good reviews, and it fitted the bill regarding being native 4K and was laser illuminated. Although the quoted noise level was a few dB higher than my old JVC it was quieter than other options. When I saw Richer Sounds offering £1,000 off for a marked box I decided to bite the bullet and buy one.
The projector has proved capable of producing some excellent images, and overall I’m very happy with what I’ve got for the money paid. I’m projecting onto a 77” screen in a darkened room, and as expected the images are bright and vibrant. Initially I found the fan noise to be intrusive as the projector is mounted directly above me, however I’ve reduced the laser output to minimum which still provides a good level of brightness, and reduces the fan noise to a more acceptable level for me. When playing an HDR disk the laser output increases to ’50’, and the fan noise sometimes increases depending on content, but this haven’t proved to be a problem.
The subjective white and black uniformity across the screen is excellent, as is the focus which is sharp to the corners. The registration is very good, although I did shift the red horizontally a little to optimise this.
Motion handling is superb, and I haven’t been aware of any noticeable artefacts.
I found that the projector is unable to produce a decent black, even with the laser brightness, and overall brightness setting set to minimum. In the darkened room a totally black image produces a visible dark grey raster. (Changing between standard and enhanced HDMI format doesn’t help). Regarding setting the HDMI format I found that the setting is global rather than per preset like most of the functions. This was confirmed to be the case by Sony. I think the old D-ILA projector was better in this respect.
Regarding the colorimetry I felt the red to my eyes was not a pure red, and was airing towards orange, although not enough to have a major impact on my enjoyment.
On a final point, I turned the ‘Network Management’ option to ON, even though I don’t currently have a network connection. which halves the time for the projector to produce the image. A small point but one I felt was worthwhile. There is a very small (negligible) increase in standby power consumption doing this.

Amazing UHD picture for the money.
Received my Sony VPL-XW5000 projector on free next day delivery from Richer Sounds of Chester and out of the box settings are amazing. Upscaling of 1080p HD sources is probably second to none. 4K sources result in almost 3D like pictures popping from the screen. Black levels are excellent and colours seem very natural even without any tweaking. Once installed the projector is very easy to set up, using the manual focus, zoom and vertical and horizontal offsets and warm up time is about 50 seconds. The WX5000 is the entry level laser light source projector and uses the same processor that is in their flagship projector priced at an eye watering £85000. Considering this WX5000 is listed at £6000 - happy days. Being a laser projector, the light source does not deteriorate over its anticipated lifetime of 20000 hours whereas the lamp based projector will require the bulb changing every 3 to 4000 hours. This entry level laser projector does not cater for 3D film sources as my previous Sony lamp based projector did, but other than that I have nothing negative to say about the new WX5000. if thjis is in your budget then go for it as there is nothing to compare to it at this price point. Kudos to Richer Sounds staff for their assistance and prompt service as well as their 6 year warranty.
