Now better than ever, with absorber technology The latest 'S' version of the HD800S uses an innovative absorber technology that was first pioneered in the IE800 model. By absorbing unwanted resonance, the most subtle details are clearer and the sound is less congested. Especially noticeably at high frequencies, the HD800S has better resolution than the standard model.
The largest transducers for class-leading dynamics Contained within these large headphones are, unsurprisingly, the largest speaker transducers that are commercially available. The innovative design of these speakers gives a dynamic response and bass depth that's almost impossible to reproduce with smaller designs. Furthermore, the stainless steel housings ensure a highly rigid and robust chamber, enhancing the neutrality of these headphones still further.
Open-backed angled earcups It's not just the transducers that set these headphones apart, it's their entire design. The open-back design gives an open and spacious sound for a true 'out of the head' listening experience. Impedance-matched cable with precision connectors and low capacitance further aids ultra low levels of distortion.
Supplied with 4.4mm balanced cable for the ultimate connection Another improvement with the 'S' model is the inclusion of a balanced connection cable with 4.4mm plug. Connect up to a compatible headphone amp, such as the HDV820, and you'll benefit from a fully balanced connection. Super soundThese headphones give a super sound. Clarity is excellent, and each individual instrument carries its own character. Sound leakage is limited, as is intrusion from ambient sounds. A real treat to enjoy classical music.

You will not regret buying theseBought from Glasgow's RIcher Sounds. Great headphones. Sure, they're open backed and so someone can hear what you are listening to from 10 feet away, But that, really, is the only criticism... and if you are buying these then you know that. They are not for the train or the bus.
Seriously. These are simply the best you can buy. They maybe lack a little bit of bass (but actually what I mean is that they let you hear music the way it was intended). If you don't like that, add an equalizer.
And Richer Sounds offer the best service. I auditioned these, with no pressure, against the 820s. All I got was helpful advice.
Cannot recommend these, or RIcher Sounds, enough.

Great decisionAfter many months of deliberation I finally took the plunge to purchase the HD800S. They sit alongside my PMC OB1 speakers, Cambridge 851 streamer and Class A headphone amp... But wow!, what a revelation -hearing detail/ plucks and scratching of strings, nuances of breath in vocals, and things previously masked or missing from what I've heard before.
Yes, these are extremely revealing, and not for the feint hearted if your source is first generation CDs with their sand-paper harsh A-D recordings. But play a quality source, or even vinyl, and you'll be rewarded with detail you never knew was there, like a 20yr old single malt.
Some reviews have noted a thinness in the bass. Not at all. It is smooth, clean and extended. True, its never going to compete with the window rattling /chest thumping 100 Watts pumping through the OB1s transmission line speakers -coloured by the resonances of the listening room, but this is not what headphones are about. This is about sweet sensual immersion in the finesse of the detail and the performance of the musicians.
As for construction, yes you definitely know you're handling a top-end product. 'Substantial' without being overly heavy. They fit well, even for spectacle wearers, and are cool and comfy. The connection lead is plenty long enough, and super-flexible textile-covered, meaning it drapes where its put rather than getting hung up and awkwardly in the way like 'traditional' cable.
The icing on the cake is the quality hinged-lid storage box to keep them safe out of the way when not in use. If I had a criticism, I'd have preferred a little more space in the box to quickly drop the lead into without having to loop it in. Would I buy them again? Yes.

Amazing headphones.The detail and sound stage is so much better than I was expecting. Much better than any of the Focal headphones I have tried. I thought my AKG K812 were very detailed, but with the HD800S headphones I’m now in the next league.

Hi end headphones with excellent sound qualityI bought these headphones a few weeks ago, and straight out of the box they sounded good but not as good as I had hoped. However, with only around twenty hours or so burn in, they are living up to the quality I purchased them for, which was to match the sound of my extremely satisfying PMC monitor loudspeakers. I listen mainly to classical music, and these headphones deliver a tonal quality that accurately reproduces the signal that they are being fed with, whether it be a small chamber group, a full orchestra or opera. They are not too 'bright' or 'warm' and although several reviews mentioned a disappointing lack of bass, all I can say is, that there is definitely clean bass there (and in orchestral music there is more genuine bass than almost any other genre), but I feel people perceive a lack of bass because they can't 'feel' it, which is the main disadvantage of listening on headphones.
These headphones are packed in a sturdy box which, although pretty large, will store them safely when not in use. They look and feel of a sturdy build, come with a high quality 3 meter length cable which has a tough protective covering. They are reasonably comfortable to wear,
but they don't cut out surrounding noise, and are totally impractacle for wearing in the gym, out running, or in any noisy enviroment. They are definitely for listening to the music.
The cost is quite high, but when the cost of a good pair of speakers is taken into consideration, I think they are good value for money.

Worth the moneyYes, these are very expensive, but if you are lucky enough to be able to afford them, don't hesitate. I realised open-back headphones are better for the music I mainly listen to (classical), because they open up the space and separate instruments more effectively. These particular headphones just take this all to another level, with great sense of space, beautiful balance, no harshness, and massive depth of sound. I now can't wait every evening to get to another of my favourite Cds to see how much more I can hear and how much more musical it all sounds. I have no regrets at all about buying these, and can't see myself bothering to try to find anything better. As far as I can see, they don't need to be run in (not sure tbh if any headphones actually do).
