Super-smooth and detailed images come naturally to the Optoma UHD42.

Clearly better, with 4K UHD resolution
With over eight million pixels, Ultra HD 4K resolution brings four times more detail than Full HD, delivering sharper, life-like images and richer colours. A further advantage of UHD 4K resolution is that, because the pixels are smaller, you can sit much closer to the screen. This makes the UHD42 ideal for rooms that previously might have been too small for a projector to work at its best.

Reveal hidden detail with HDR10 and HLG
Compatible with HDR10 video, the UHD42 lets you see far more detail and texture. HDR enhances the brightest and darkest sections of scenes – letting you see detail in what was previously a solid block of colour. It also makes the rest of the colour spectrum appear more natural, giving an even greater sense of ‘being there’. The UHD42 is also compatible with HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) – the high dynamic range developed for broadcasting.

Class-leading brightness for lights-on viewing
Boasting an outstanding brightness figure of 3400 ANSI Lumens, the UHD42 not only offers bright and vivid colours but is also able to be used in many lighting conditions. Even during daylight conditions with curtains or blinds open, the Optoma produces a watchable and detailed picture – thanks to its sensational brightness.

Colour – just as it should be
The UHD42 is capable of reproducing the Rec.709 colour gamut, the international HDTV standard to guarantee accurate reproduction of cinematic colour - exactly as the director intended. Enjoy watching films and TV shows and playing games with stunning colours in any environment.

Colour Management System (CMS)
Display accurate life-like colours to best match your viewing environment. This unique feature provides you with the flexibility to fine-tune the colour settings to the Rec. 709 standard for optimal precision.

Wall Colour Adjustment for optimised colour
Although a dedicated screen is always going to give the best results, the UHD42 offers Wall Colour Adjustment for when this isn’t possible. Six options let you adjust the image to suit blackboard, light yellow, light green, light blue, pink and grey walls.

Vertical lens shift
Simplify installation with vertical lens shift, which provides a wider range of projector placement possibilities. This makes it easier to position the projector in your room and enables a wider range of screen size options.

Gaming advantage
A trio of features make the UHD42 perfect for gaming. 240Hz smooth motion gives fluid motion and reduced delay – making fast-moving games a less nerve-racking experience. Game Mode optimises the projector’s contrast to produce vivid detail and maximum contrast – perfect for spotting the danger lurking in the shadows. With input lag reduced to 15.70ms, you can be assured lightning-fast response times.

Flexible connectivity, including twin HDMI sockets
Featuring twin HDMI sockets (one compatible with HDR), you can connect a UHD Blu-ray player and video streamer. For older sources, the UHD42 also comes with a VGA input – perfect for laptops and PCs. Multi-room connectivity is enhanced by an RS232 interface, plus there’s a 12v output for syncing with an electric screen. Audio is outputted via digital optical or analogue 3.5mm sockets.

USB power
Another great feature is the handy USB power output. This is used to power USB-powered smart devices, such as the Google’s Chromecast or a Roku TV stick. Plug Chromecast, or similar, in and you’ll have easy access to smart video and TV services without the need for any other device or lengthy connection cables.

Scale up your home entertainment, with the Optoma UHD42.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant home projector, quiet and very bright I bought this just before Christmas 2020, it was a massive upgrade to my previous 720p projector. I have a home cinema setup that's dark, so I am running the projector in low brightness and eco-mode. The image quality is astonishing, better than going to the cinema.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Experience of projector - beaut. Physical setup was easy, cable management a little trickier; one of the ports is HDMI 1.4, one is 2.0 - both are technically 4K capable, but the former only at 30hz, which is a little juddery, but, especially given I was planning to hook my PC up to it, made the mouse look ridiculous. After that, found that the junction box for my various HDMI inputs was not 2.0 rated, so it lost signal once something scaled up to full 4K before going into the projector - this took me a while to figure out, but none was the fault of the projector. Only writing for if it saves someone some trouble in the future... Only niggle is that the menu controls for the projector are faffy. The 'information' tab contains things you'd expect to be able to alter, but can't, so you spend some time trying to figure out how to access the options. Meanwhile the actual ways to alter these are in the other menu tabs, which scroll onto more than one page, which isn't immediately obvious. Image quality etc - all excellent. Quieter than previous projector, quieter than my PC, and really bright. Like, so bright I had to paint the wall it was going onto grey (this is supposedly the optimal colour anyway, but a somewhat funny problem to have). Richer Sounds service - brilliant. Ordered during lockdown, service was uninterrupted, spoke to people on the phone to query some bits and they were friendly, confident and knew all the answers. Delivery was speedy thereafter despite the covid disruptions and the guarantee certainly eases stress.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect upgrade from HD to 4k gaming My previous projector was an Optoma HD141X, and before upgrading to this UHD42 (UHD50x in the US), I had tried the BenQ TK810 as a loaner device. Both projectors were a noticeable upgrade from the HD141X in terms of image quality. The BenQ was incredibly loud compared to my old Optoma, while this Optoma UHD42 had very similar fan noise to the HD141X. Very happy with that. The image is crisp and clearer than UHD 4k TVs at a similar price range, in my opinion. That's with the projector pointing at a white wall. The remote works much better than the BenQ, with reliable controls for all functionality including pass-through volume. Primary uses are gaming (PS4 & PS5) as well as movies/series. I have not noticed any input lag (while the BenQ definitely had some). My only gripes: - The default image settings are terrible. Look online (e.g reddit) for what others have experimented with and turn off the ultra detail feature. Takes a bit of setup, but after that the image reproduction is perfect. Still better than the BenQ for sure and easy to handle by configuration. - The gaming mode disables any custom keystone & zoom settings. Sadly that makes gaming mode unusable for me. That being said, input lag hasn't been noticeable so far and the image is pristine after proper tuning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant piece of kit I decided to upgrade my older 1080p projector and I am mightily impressed with the UHD42! Pros: The picture is fantastic with vibrant colours, dead easy to set up, gaming mode works great with the new xbox and it was packaged really well. Richer sounds telesales staff (Sean M) was excellent, very knowledgeable and patient. The service I received was second to none, I wouldn’t think twice about returning as a customer! Cons: The internal speaker is pretty naff (like most projectors) however i run mine to AV receiver and therefore this is of no concern to me. If you’re setting up your home cinema from scratch i would recommend additional kit for sound.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great projector! This projector gives a 100inch, 4K quality screen at about 9ft away. It’s easy to set up. I’m using a 4K Roku dongle and it works perfectly. It gets hot, so make sure it has ventilation. Some reviews knock this projector for movies compared to Epson and Benq. I have no comparison, but it’s excellent for movies. Only drawback is that a line appears in the middle of the screen sometimes, but you just click the resync button on the remote and it’s resolved in 5-10 seconds. Also, it’s a shame it doesn’t come with a lens cover. Customer service from Richer Sounds and 6 year warranty is great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product so far but poor service. I have used RS for a few years now but was disappointed with my current purchase as I was looking for an AV amp as well. This required a demonstration as I was not happy with my existing unit. RS sell the same speakers as I have so would have been ideal. However, having booked a demonstration I was contacted to be informed that the demo couild not go ahead due to cabling problems in the shop which were built into the wall. A poor excuse, I'm afraid so I went to Sevenoaks in Manchester for an excellent demonstration and purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent picture Recently bought this after researching for a while. I'm more than happy to report it is excellent; fine picture and easy to set up, with enough brightness to watch with background ambient lighting. I would have preferred 2 HDMI 2.2 connections, having to rely on Optical out to my Amp for sound which does have a minor lag. Sam from RS telesales was excellent, thank you Sam.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy set up. Great picture Bought this to create a cinema atmosphere. Still in the process of setting up a proper sound system to go with it but used it to watch dvds, blu rays and internet streaming. Really impressed with the image from all sources (including the internet when my broadband connection is working properly). We do experience some fan noise which was expected and is not disturbing. Let’s face it you can’t have a projector without a fan! I am also happy with the brightness of the image given my screen width is 2.3 metres. Even with this screen size you can view images in daylight but of course the intensity of the image is enhanced if you either reduce the screen size or cut out ambient light. This is my first projector purchase and was made on the strength of a friend’s recommendation and demonstration of an older Optoma HD143X. I would happily make the same purchase decision again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value 4K Home Cinema and Gaming Projector Bought this projector as a replacement for an Epson TW5100. Placement was a major consideration when choosing a new projector, so throw ratio, zoom and lens shift were all important factors, along with 4K and 3D capabilities. Also, the physical dimensions had to be taken into account due to the actual location. I had the Epson sitting on a custom built shelf above the viewing position and this is where I originally placed the Optoma. However, this highlighted the new projector's shortcomings when compared to the Epson. I was not able to move the image down sufficiently to match the 92" ceiling mounted screen. I solved this by purchasing a ceiling mount for the projector, and once inverted, I could position the image on screen using the tilt of the mounting bracket along with the projector lens shift. Due to a slightly different throw ratio and zoom, the image does not fully fill the screen, like the Epson, probably 88" diagonal. The image itself is excellent. Playing a UHD Bluray of "Earth - One Amazing Day" on a Sony UBP-X700 through an Onkyo TX NR686 AV Receiver, the colours were vibrant with plenty of detail. "Division 2" on PS4 Pro ran like a dream, thanks to the 240Hz gaming mode. For 3D I had to purchase some DLP Link 3D glasses (different standard to the Epson), but these connected instantly to the projector, and there was plenty of depth to the image on "The Hobbit - Battle of the Five Armies". Can't comment on the sound quality. Using this in a Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 set up, the projector's built in speaker was never going to be an issue. Having only had this a week, I haven't played around with the various modes and settings, but my initial thoughts are that this is a very capable 4K projector, and a must for serious big screen gaming. I assume that it will be a great partner for the upcoming PS5. Also, great value for money, and would have warranted 5 stars if there was more adjustment of the physical image size and position. Horizontal Keystone adjustment would have been handy, along with the included vertical adjustment. This may probably not be an issue for most people, but something to consider if your placement options are limited.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bright, compact, fairly easy to setup and configure I replaced a previous generation 4k projector which was playing up with this unit. The price point and feature set are ideal, the picture is bright and sharp, and the faster refresh rate reduces the rainbow effect of DLP quite a lot. There are some firmware issues, a couple of times it has forgotten my settings when powered on, a couple of times there is a colour difference between the left and right half of the screen (a click of the right button to re-sync solves this), the actuator is noticeably noisier than previous models. The unit is small and could be considered a bit flimsy, the three bolts to secure to a projector mount are a bit of a faff, and with the smaller size and brighter output, the background noise of the unit is much worse than my previous model. Overall, the picture is bright and the niggles are acceptable, I’m sure a firmware update will solve the settings issue and the display issue, but should you have to do this for a unit that costs this much?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Picture With Niggling Flaws I bought this a month ago to replace a 12 year old 1080p projector and first time with Optoma. Bought during lockdown the first things to note are you can only use it either coffee table forward and up or ceiling mounted pointing down either onto screen or rear screen. My old projector had vertical and horizontal manual chunky thumbscrew adjusters, the UHD42 has minute vertical adjustment from a less than impressive disc. To make the projector work in our room I was advised by Optoma to use their ceiling mount - avoid based on the one I was sent. On finding a better mount on Day 40 I could then turn on and use in our usual room. Overall picture and 4k playback is lightyears better than old projector experience but I would avoid the in built speaker apart from when you want to be on the move (with coffee table position being better for sound). The projector doesn't come with a lens cover and if you're a little o.c.d. a very short black power cable. (Optoma website does not have specific lens caps available yet for the UHD42 and for the sake of something that retails for £2.50 why not include as standard?)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Optoma UHD42 I have been looking for a projector for us, so we can have movie nights outside etc. I wanted it 4K/HDR/speaker as still have a very good HD TV I saw no reason to replace. After seeing the reviews on What Hi-Fi for the Optoma UHD40 I went down that journey to purchase, but realised that the 40 was 'old' and has been replaced by the 42. The spec. was much better and after seeking advice from Richer Sounds I decided to buy the 42 though them. I have nothing to compare as do not have a 4K TV, but set it up for our first Movie night against a 3m white wall on full 4K for Disney Plus - Lion King. I used a Amazon Fire Stick into the HDMI. This was in the evening, with no light interference. Wow - it was amazing. The clarity of the picture, colours, blacks were incredible. I tried HD version of films and messed about with the different options, Cinema, HDR, Bright, reference etc. I have not used it with the PS Pro yet in 4K, but confident it will transform the games into another dimension for the kids. I wanted it with a speaker for portability outside etc. It is OK, if not set slightly too loud on lowest setting possible. I was not expecting 5.1 or soundbar quality, but it will do for my purposes. I will fit a soundbar when I get round to it. The fan is quiet and did not notice it even with the speaker set to 1. The only criticism I have as I want it portable, is it does not come with a lens cap or zip-carrier except the cardboard box it came in. I bought this at £1149 via Richer Sounds with the 0% 10 Months plan. All set up and done over the phone and quickly delivered. I always buy from Richer Sounds for the big stuff and they have never failed me, especially with the 6 yr guarantee....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sound value for money Installed a week ago so early days but fantastic picture. Deals with light no problem. Fan noise is present - doesn’t affect sound but I’ve switched off the projector internal for surround sound. And Richer Sounds always the place to go for this sort of tech. Decision I’m left with now is new Xbox or PS for Christmas??

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Great Value Having tried the really cheap projectors and being disappointed I decided to spend little more without breaking the bank. This projector is great value for money and exceeded my expectations. Yes the speakers are poor (its projector not a sound system) but the picture is great straight out of the box. Don't get a projector if you expect a perfect picture in daylight, it won't happen. The picture is tolerable and easy to view in a bright room turn the brightness right up (at the expense of colour and contrast) and it is actually really good for a projector, super bright. Darken the room and the UHD42 comes alive, 4k through the HDMI 2 port is amazing, as is the HDR. For a tenth of the price of the top end gear this really is great quality. Hook it up to an NVidea shield and Disney + 4k with a decent sound system, and you are at the movies (though the picture is better than at the Odean!) for not much money. Play with the settings manually and you can achieve great things, yet to play with the 3d and other settings but first impressions are that this is a great projector and at this price point, hard to fault. I don't get the comments about the vertical shift being only one way, start the shifter in the middle and it works both ways? For the money, hard to beat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Impressed with picture Impressed with the picture and it was very easy to setup using my universal mount. I am 2.6m from my screen and I have a 99inch picture. I beleive projectors need some time for the lamps to reach optimal conditions (a bit like running a car in), but from the off it has been a marked improvement on my previous optima 720p. The screen is bright enough to be seen if full daylight with the curtains opened and lights on. It is far from optical obviously and the lacks and colours are definitely washed out, but then what would you expect. It's still usable. In 3/4 to full darkness it really pops however. I notice no lag in game mode at all (even when not using the enhanced gaming section), but I'm not a competitive or professional online gamer. The HDR setting works well and HDR sim for non HDR content seems to be decent too. I'm no expert though. I'm not so keen on the dynamic black mode. I think it makes the picture slightly lighter and more washed out (but I know it will make the lamp last longer) There are a few things that have disappointed me however: I cannot get any 4k content from my 4k Firestick when I plug it into the HDMI 1.4 port, but it does work on the hdmi 2.0 port. A bit annoying as i also have an xbox one X for that port for the 120hz gaming. So either I'm going to have to get an hdmi splitter and run both through the hdmi 2.0 port, or accept the firestick won't be in 4k, A second issue is the integrated speakers. Like most reviews say, they're not great. They are loud, but without bass and very tinny. A very annoying feature is that even though I've connected the projector to my soundbar via an optical cable the internal speaker still outputs at the same time! so my rich sounding soundbar is competing with my tinny internal speaker. There is an option to turn off the internal speaker in the menu, but it leaves a speaker off logo permanently on the top right of the screen! The internal speakers are really loud at the lowest setting, so it's very annoying. I've found a strange workaround for this though: By plugging a 3.5mm cable into the projectors audio out port (and not plugging the other end of the cable into anything) the internal speakers are silenced - AND the sound still comes through the optical port to my soundbar. So i don't need to turn the internal speakers off and see that stupid icon display and i don't need to hear the internal speakers bashing away above my head when my soundbar is far better. A very, very strange way to get this done though. surely this is a software fault. finally - while it has vertical lens shift - please be aware it is only capable of shifting in one direction - down the way. If you have the projector mounted like i do, the projector sits inverted on the ceiling. So this means that you'll only be able to lens shift your image further up your wall. I got lucky and my setup was just the right height, but it was still unexpected that in mounted position i would be able to shift the image any further down the way (but could shift it up if i needed)
