”The Sony HT-G700 is an accomplished soundbar, and it delivers an excellent 3.1-channel performance thanks to decent speakers, powerful amplification and a well-integrated subwoofer.” ’AV Forums’ – Recommended.

Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatible for uplifting sound

Using Sony’s VSE (Vertical Surround Engine), the HT-G700 reproduces ‘vertical’ audio to give truly uplifting, Dolby Atmos sound. Combine VSE with Virtual DTS:X and you get DTS:X compatibility, too. Both systems deliver a sound with a true feeling of height – putting you right in the centre of a jungle or beneath screaming warplanes.

Upscale to 7.1.2 for enveloping sound
Whether you’re enjoying a movie, gaming or just watching TV, the HT-G700 lets you experience a more immersive sound through Immersive AE (Audio Enhancement). At the touch of a button, Sony’s advanced signal processing converts any audio signal into a pseudo 7.1.2 channel signal – totally surrounding you with expansive audio.

Dedicated centre channel for crystal-clear dialogue
This 3.1 channel Sony soundbar features a dedicated centre speaker for the crispest, clearest dialogue. The addition of a centre speaker not only makes the dialogue easier to hear but also locates the sound firmly to the image on the screen – making the sync between the two much more harmonious.

Powerful bass from a wireless subwoofer
The separate subwoofer frees up the soundbar from the compromise of doing two jobs at once. Instead, it remains dedicated to the task of producing a holographic, 3D sound, leaving the subwoofer free to provide deep, cinema-like bass. What's more, with it being a wireless subwoofer you're free to position it anywhere within the room without the hassle of a connection wire between it and the soundbar.

Sound modes tailored to your viewing
It's easy to get just the right balance, at the touch of a button, with Sound Mode. ‘Cinema’ gives a powerful, dynamic sound that delivers all the thrills of the multiplex. For listening to your favourite tunes, ‘Music’ mode brings out all the detail for the most lifelike sound. ‘Standard’ gives the most neutral sound or switch to ‘Auto Sound’ for the processor to decide the best setting.

HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG compatible HDMI interface
Fitted with one HDMI input and one eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) HDMI output, the soundbar is ideal for connecting a UHD Blu-ray player or games console. The HDMI sockets are compatible with HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) formats, meaning that the latest UHD formats are all covered. Other inputs include an optical digital input and USB for your music sources.

Stream your music with wireless Bluetooth
More than just a boost for your TV sound, the Sony HT-G700 soundbar also makes a handy Bluetooth speaker for your music. Pair with your smartphone, tablet or computer stream all your stored music and favourite streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music - without the need for any wires.

Experience cinematic sound, without all the boxes, with the Sony HT-G700.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Average sound Average sound. Randomly cuts sound off. Bar settings should be projected on tv screen for review and adjustments

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cinema Sound at Home Great sound bar. Bought to go with my Sony TV and Dolby Atmos compatibility. So much better than sound from TV. Big sound nice rumble from the subwoofer from movies. The virtual surround effects work well. Atmos would be more effective if it had upward firing speakers but you do still get a sense of height. Could be better/clearer for music but that is not what I bought it for. The only thing that could be better is the clarity of voices, sometimes they are a bit quiet, 1 Star off for that (would only be a half star if that was possible). Maybe an update could improve this and make it 5 stars Sony? Using the Dolby speaker virtualiser effect with voice on seems to be the best balance. Sony's own virtual surround seems to place objects the best and have a more full bodied sound if that is your thing. Navigating the menu can be a bit fiddly at first but easy when you know how. All in all I would recommend this product is you are looking for an Atmos compatible soundbar that is great for movies. (One caveat is that I cannot get the update file to unzip on Mac)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from G700 I bought this product based on the features as my drawing room is small. The sound and bass is really good but for atmos u needs to have volume but high. And it not always feels ready all are okay for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound Bought this to reduce wires as had a 5.1 speaker system before, trying to make a simpler set up. Sound is great while playing the PS5 and kids love it on the switch. We watched Starwars last night and only had it over half way on volume and was worried the neighbours might say something as it was like being in the cinema, sub was moving me during some storm trooper battles! So if you like your set up to look minimalistic, but have a quality sound and at a reasonable price, I would recommend this product, it’s a great addition to my new Sony Bravia T.V, just make sure you know where the sub is going as it was bigger than I expected compared to my last sub, but that’s not a bad thing when your submersed in a movie or a game, it really adds to the experience!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound, features and style Had this now for a few weeks and very happy. Easy to set up and use. Sounds great and expansive. Really picks out the dialogue well, even on older films/TV. Looks nice but wide so only advisable for 55” and above TVs. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly great sound I bought this to replace a Yamaha AV receiver 5.1 system and want expecting much but I'm really impressed that it was a massive improvement, the virtual Atmos surround and bass is really impressive. I imagine the real Atmos surround is good but I'm more than happy with this it makes films have the extra dimension like the cinemas.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Bad, but not Wonderful I had the HT-X8500 (without the sub-woofer) and to be honest I thought this was a lot better sounding than this the G700. All in all I found this unit to a bit under whelming and a bit of a disappointment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well and don't need the remote Bought this as was tired of how bad my LG TV was at controlling sound volume on an existing amp using the optical out. This connects with a single HDMI ARC connection to the TV, auto powers on and off, and lets me control the volume with the existing TV remote. Sound wise, it's good. Though prefer the wider audio stage I get with a decent 2.1 setup.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sounds great to me! I’m no expert but this purchase has improved the sound from my 11 year old Sony TV so much. Also it operates seamlessly via my tv - I switch the tv on and the soundbar comes on, turn it off and it goes off. Maybe a minor issue but important to me - I hate messing around with lots of remotes! Altogether a successful purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sound and easy to set up I bought to this accompany our new 55" 4k tv with hdmi 2.1. We play the playstation 5 through this set up. The sound is so much of a vast improvement to the tv speakers its unreal. We haven't had a soundbar b4 so we did alot searching and checking reviews. Really pleased with this model although 2 little things may niggle people. 1 - sound goes off once in a while but comes straight back on or by returning to tv speakers then selecting audio system brings it back to life 2 - voices can be a little feint with sub woofer if watching a normal programme with lots of surrounding music. Great for ps5 and watching films which we got to enhance our experience. So pleased we chose this soundbar along with separate subwoofer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound and lots of audio formats supported For a very good price this soundbar packs a punch and sounds like there are speakers all over the room when Atmos kicks in ,it's easy to set up via the hdmi Earc/arc connection and very easy to navigate around the control ,this has exceeded all my expectations in producing Dolby Atmos sound out of a 3.1 channel sound bar ,I would love to see Sony's 7.1.2 channel in action if this one is so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound/pound This was bought to replace a full surround system in a complete re-model of our sitting room. There was no expectation that it would compete sonically with the system that it's replacing and, on that basis, it certainly hasn't disappointed. Very, very easy to set up, good remote, goes loud, clarity remains pretty solid (the high end gets a little tight) but overall it fills a smaller space with a good sound and certainly adds to the quality of any film or tv show that you may be watching. For streamed music there is little stereo separation (unsurprisingly) but again it presents a decent enough sound. All in all, a great buy at the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Extremely disappointing. Would not recommend. Hardly any difference compared to just the TV alone. Sub woofer particularly disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value and not overpowering to look at ! Bought this at reduced price. Some speaker systems are large and dominate the room. This is a great compromise with sharp sound and thumpy base when needed but doesn't take up a whole lot of space. With the Dolby it must be one of the best value. Easily attached to TV with HDMI arc and BT with phone for music. Richer Sounds service perfect also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought my TV had good sound..... ... Until I bought this soundbar, and now we don't watch anything without it. The depth of sound, reinforced by the wireless sub tucked away in the opposite corner of the room, gives a whole new dimension (literally) to watching everything from sport to action movies, and even The Crown! Wish I had bought one sooner....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great soundbar at this price point The Sony HT-G700 is great value – especially for those more interested in movies. there are few better soundbars at the price. Whilst some may argue that this does not provide 'true' Atmos, it does a terrific job nonetheless, compared to other soundbars at a similar price. It also benefits from eARC and HDMI in. It is not all good news however, due to a lack of wi-fi and as a result, a loss of features and the capability for adding rear speakers
Date published: 2020-12-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first soundbar - great choice! I must have read every review of every soundbar under £500, but once I decided on the Sony HT-G700, Richer Sounds was always going to be the place to buy it. Getting a great price beat deal, I splashed out on the no-risk 6 year warranty. The soundbar is as good as I had hoped. It's not true Dolby Atmos (no upward-firing speakers), but it still sounds great. No regrets!
Date published: 2020-12-03
Rated 2 out of 5 by from I can't believe all the positive reviews! Yes it works, yes it decodes Atmos, 5.1 etc. But does it sound good? Not really and definitely not worth the money. Some background to help explain. I have been looking for a replacement for my (very) old Sony 5.1 system and am very tempted by the promise of Atmos. However, my room layout is very unusual (no right angles) and so I would prefer to have proper rear speakers in any setup. That makes all serious options (receiver plus speakers or soundbar plus wireless speakers) quite expensive. As we seem to be in (yet another) transition stage as 8k and HDMI 2.1 become more common, I'm reluctant to spend that sort of money on something that might become outdated fairly soon. So I saw this, thought it might be a stop-gap for a couple of years, read the reviews, and saw reviews of other systems that fake Atmos to give a sense of height, and regrettably, believed the hype. When I got this and had it working my initial thought was the sound was worse than from my TV's own speakers. I spent a few hours playing with the different modes and comparing back and forth between this and the TV's speakers. Now my TV is a 75" Samsung so possibly it has much bigger speakers than smaller units and so might also enjoy better quality sound. But really, should it be difficult to tell which is better a (nearly) £400 soundbar or a TV? After much testing, I've concluded that the soundbar does provide a fuller soundstage than the TV can. It can also, in some circumstances, sound nicer. But the big kicker for me is that dialogue is never as clear from the soundbar as from the TV speakers. Even with the Voice boost option enabled. And that mode does crush the midrange quite a bit. So it can sound ok for normal TV (standard plus voice settings) and can be slightly more engaging for films (Cinema or standard depending or the source, plus Voice, plus Immersive). But that is a lot of switching and experimenting for a £375 soundbar that should just sound good whatever you play through it. And in case anyone thinks you can enjoy the overall sound better without Voice-boost and just switch it on when you have low volume dialogue; unfortunately, it takes a second or two to switch and goes silent while it switches so you just end up missing the quiet dialogue if you do that. In summary, I'm glad many people who have got it are happy with it. Maybe it is a step up if your TV speakers are terrible. And sound quality is a subjective issue. For anyone thinking of buying one though, I'd strongly recommend you search on youtube for a range of reviews especially one by a guy called totally dubbed (or something like that) as he seems to be one of the few who dare to question the supposed merits of this Sony Soundbar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound from the Sony soundbar I bought this as a replacement for another brand that developed a fault. I spoke to the manager of the Maidstone store (Ben), and took his advice to buy the Sony. It was just a bit more expensive but definitely worth it. The Sony has a few more features and you have more control over the sound. Even to the point where there is a ' voice' setting, which gives clearer dialogue, and 'night' which outputs the sound at low volume with minimum loss of quality. But the best is by far the surround sound and the fantastic whoofer sub unit, which really gives immersive sound. I am very pleased with the unit, the sound is bounced around effectively. Just remember to change the settings on your TV and DVD/ Blu ray, to ensure the best results. Thanks to Ben, who was really helpful arranging a replacement with minimum of fuss, in fact all of the staff at Maidstone are a credit to Richer Sounds because of their excellent customer service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Surround Sound System [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is a great solution if you want a solid surround sound system but do not have the space or budget for a multi speaker system. The surround sound effects cant compete with a full blown system but for someone like me who wanted great quality audio for music, TV and films, this bar and subwoofer combo really delivers. Dialogue is clear thanks to the centre speaker, and the subwoofer is extremely adequate for a small to medium sized room. Set up could not be simpler, its as near to plug and play as you could expect to get for this kind of system. It just require you to connect the two power cables from the soundbar and subwoofer and an optical cable. It’s as simple as that. The sound bar has a quality look that would look great with most TV’s and a discreet display that tells you what changes you are making when altering the volume or the mode. The remote is simple and easy to use but it is however sometimes difficult to tell the difference with some of the modes. All in all, I am extremely happy with the audio, with everything I listen to feeling a lot more crisp and clear while at the same time having depth and fullness. It seems to decode sounds that just simply aren't there on our TV's speakers. To summarise, its indisputably a great quality 3.1 system with surround sound processing at an affordable price and at the same time being very simple to set up. It’s an awesome replacement to TV speakers, whilst also having both Dolby Atmos and DTS X support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performer [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] From the moment I opened the packaging and unpacked the contents, It was easy to see that just from the initial look and feel that the HT-G700 it is a quality, premium product. It is a much higher quality than I was expecting and is a significant improvement compared against my existing, but slightly old Sony Sound Bar. It also compares very favourable to a number of the brands I have looked at in the past, some of which are significantly more expensive than the HT-G700. The unit was unpacked and installed in under 15 minutes using the “Startup Guide”. My initial set-up is connecting the HT-G700 to a Sony HDR TV using a premium quality HDMI cable and another premium cable connecting directly to a Sony UHD BlueRay player. The optical connector provided is not used. (Its disappointing that HDMI cables are still not provided in the box) The HT-G700 is positioned on a TV stand and not wall mounted. This positioning did interfere with the TV remote control operation but initiating the Sound Bar IR Repeater function rectified this easily. When switched on, I was immediately impressed with the significant improvement in the sound quality comparing to my current, older Sony Sound Bar. The sound from a TV signal is improved out of all recognition. The clarity, separation and bass is really impressive. Adjusting the sound effects using the pre-sets on the remote and changing the sub volume gives even more impressive results. The “voice” button really works and makes any dialogue based programme much easier to hear. Activating the Immersive AE function transforms the sound even more, giving you a wrap around experience with far more clarity and definition. It is a highlight of the system and really does showcase the advances in the technology. The Bluetooth connectivity works well and connecting the HT-G700 to an iPhone was easy and quick. The sound quality from either my audio streaming service or my own music collection both give very impressive results either at background music level or wound up to almost full. But, press the Music sound field and the result is a significantly change to the output of sound-bar giving you a fully immersive concert like delivery. A really impressive feature for music lovers. So far so good, the Sound Bar performance from the TV is extremely impressive, but then I played a Dolby Atmos UHD BlueRay (Mission Impossible Fallout) from my Sony UHD BlueRay player connected directly via the second HDMI connector, and was just blown away by the performance of the HT-G700. The Sound Bar just came to life. Suddenly you are totally immersed in the most impressive wrap around sound giving a real cinema like experience, which from a compact 3.1 system is just amazing. The sound was such that you really did think you had multiple speakers placed around the room and the ceiling. In addition, the impressive sub handled everything that I tried with only a little distortion at max volume. Equally, the Sound Bar also handled everything I tried and is really impressive at both low and high volumes. In conclusion, highlights include premium build quality, overall general performance, remarkably impressive UHD BlueRay Dolby Atmos performance and the price. I have a couple of minor criticisms which are the remote control included just feels a bit disappointing as it’s not quite the same premium build quality, the technically biased instruction manual is quite difficult to understand if you don’t have a technical background and, finally, the lack of HDMI cables.
