How to build a home cinema in three simple steps
The basics of a home cinema are simple – start with a way to watch your entertainment, add a home cinema amp, and/or speakers for the audio, and finish with a source of entertainment.
There are many ways to put these three elements together, and the results can vary significantly. We’re here to make these options simple, and help you find the right products for you.
Choose your screen
The evolution of TVs has seen improvements in picture quality, design and features – making the modern set ideal for a media room. For example, 8K TVs offer 16 times the resolution of a Full HD screen, while designs are getting slimmer, making wall mounting an attractive option. Finally, Smart features are getting smarter all round!
From small and compact screens, to projectors capable of giving you cinema-rivalling quality, we have it all. What’s more, projectors often cost a fraction of the price of a super-sized TV, and also take up a small amount of space – virtually disappearing when not in use.
The easiest way to ensure your projector is giving you the vivid, colourful and pin-sharp performance it's capable of is with a dedicated screen. These vary, from retractable screens conveniently hidden in your ceiling that either manually or automatically retract into a casing, to permanent screens, with a suitable gain for the ambient lighting.
Next comes the sound
Soundbars, bases and wireless rear speakers
TVs are getting slimmer and slimmer, hurray! But we have a problem. There’s not enough space in slender modern screens to squeeze in really good speakers. As a result, the dialogue is muddy and hard to pick out, and sound is shallow and doesn’t do the picture justice.
Soundbars are slim, one-box speakers that sit directly below your TV. They have enough space for speaker enclosures, yet don’t make too much visual impact on your room. The result is punchier sound effects, better bass, wider stereo separation and much clearer dialogue.
Most soundbars come paired with a wireless subwoofer that can be hidden almost anywhere in the room. Some models are compatible with separate surround speakers, either included or as optional extras, that add an additional dimension to the sound. Many soundbars can also be connected up to a Smart multiroom music system, letting you enjoy your music while making the most out of the speakers you have.
Plus, if you’ve read our exciting description of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X (see Level 3 - Add another dimension to your home cinema) but don’t have space for dedicated amp/speakers, it’s possible to upgrade to 3D surround sound with a high-end Atmos and DTS:X soundbar.

If you want to make movies, TV, sport and games far more exciting and immersive, team your stunning big-screen TV or projector with dedicated surround sound. The heart of any home cinema system is the AV receiver. These are multichannel amplifiers that power separate speakers located around the room. Plug in your TV or projector, Blu-ray player, games console, and anything else you watch or listen to, and simply flick between sources to change your entertainment.
Complement your AV receiver with dedicated home cinema speakers. These range from very small speakers, often known as satellite speakers, all the way up to large audiophile speakers, designed to sound as good as they look.
Systems generally start in a 5.1 configuration – which is one centre speaker under your TV or projectors, usually handling dialogue, a left and right speaker that brings stereo to the sound, and two rear speakers adding the surround effects. This set-up can be expanded upon with additional rear speakers, or front speakers giving extra width or height to the sound.
We’re especially excited about new technology that delivers cinematic surround effects in almost 360 degrees sound. At your local cinema, this is done using overhead speakers. This is an option at home too, but we also stock innovative solutions that put upwards-firing drivers on the top of your front speakers to bounce the sound effects off the ceiling.
Dolby Atmos adds a new dimension to surround sound for all types of movies and games, placing effects precisely in space, just as the director intended. DTS:X is similar but is versatile because it works with all sorts of speaker set-ups, meaning whatever your speaker set-up, the system will deliver it to the best of its abilities.
To make the most of this new technology, combine a Dolby Atmos / DTS:X compatible AV receiver with similar speakers, and experience the next level of cinematic immersion. The custom installation route – when only the best will do.
We know a thing or two about home cinema – and our passion is using this insight to help you find the ideal system for you. This can involve turning a garage or unused spare room into a dedicated home cinema. A dream installation consists of design, products, and optimisation. Miss any of these crucial steps and your left with a sub-par experience.
First discussions will help us establish the ideal screen size for the room, along with speaker positioning and angles based on Dolby’s specifications, matching exactly how Hollywood films are mastered. We can also use this opportunity to run tests in the room – suggesting the best methods and products for the acoustics and lighting in the space.

From tiered and optimally positioned cinema seating, to the right number and placement of subwoofers designed to minimise standing waves, we’re here for you.
Optimisation is key
We don’t just put the equipment in the room and walk away, we optimise. We can calculate the light in the room, the light output of the projector, the screen size and gain to ensure you are getting the right brightness. We can adjust DSP modes on your equipment for reference quality, using a range of apps, software and techniques. From initial concept, to final execution, we’re here for you every step of the way.
What to watch? The choice is yours…
The capacity of the discs allow for uncompressed picture and sound - giving you a more detailed movie with an explosive soundtrack, compared to streaming.
You’re also likely to get treats, such as deleted scenes, commentary tracks and other featurettes not usually found when you stream, making 4K Blu-ray the enthusiasts’ choice.
4K TV services
There are many different ways to pipe stunning Ultra HD quality entertainment live into your home. The latest range of Freeview Play and Freesat boxes offer up a selection of UHD content for free, as well as recording and catch-up.
As well as improved picture quality, streamed 4K content can also deliver fully immersive surround sound. Pair your screen up with a surround sound system to get the most out of your content.
Smart entertainment on-demand
Use HDMI to run your TV or projector’s sound through your dedicated home cinema system or soundbar with ease, letting you enjoy in-built Smart content, such as BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, in superior quality. 4K Blu-ray players and set-top boxes also offer you options to stream your favourite entertainment too.
Look out for voice-activated Smart assistant equipment, letting you control them with a simple request, for the ultimate convenience.
The newest generation of gaming consoles and computers are very powerful. 4K sharpness, HDR picture and high frame-rate all give you an experience that will make your heart beat faster and adrenaline flow.
However, this technology can only be used with a screen or projector that makes the most of these features. Get the most out of your gaming with a high frame-rate TV or a 4K HDR projector, and fully-immersive surround sound system.
